      Living Olympism @ Greendale Secondary

Greendale Secondary School’s Olympic journey started in 2008 and and has grown ever since. Here are some highlights of Olympic Education related activities that our school has embarked on.

OCTOBER 2008

Assembly talk by Mr Ang Peng Siong
Our school hosted a local swimming legend, Mr Ang Peng Siong on 14 October 2008. During his talk, he shared his experience competing at the Olympics and the lessons he gained from being a competitive swimmer.

NOVEMBER 2008

Singapore Olympic Academy Youth Session

4 students were selected to attend the inaugural SOA Youth Session at the MOE Labrador Adventure Centre from 3-5 November 2008.

At the camp, the participants learnt more about Olympism and how to include it in our daily lives. Participants also had an opportunity to meet with our local Olympians including Lee Wung Yew (shooter), Tan Eng Yoon (athletics), Zarina Abdullah (badminton) as well as Paralympians Theresa Goh (swimming) and Eric Ting (wheelchair racing).



Mr Abdul Halim, upon the invitation of the SOA, did a sharing session with teachers from other schools on the Olympic Education programmes that are being implemented in Greendale Secondary.


JANUARY 2009

2010 Youth Olympic Games Logo Launch

4 students participated in the 2010 YOG Logo Launch which was held on 10 January 2009 at the SMU Campus Green. The students are Marianne Ong (4E1), Ng Shuyi and Nur Adilah (4E2) and Ang Hui Ning (4E3).



FEBRUARY 2009

12th National Olympic Academy Session for Young Leaders
Mr Abdul Halim was selected as one of two delegates representing Singapore at the annual session held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 12th Session saw 23 participants from Malaysia and 23 international participants from Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, China, USA, Thailand, Maldives, Korea, Philippine, Britian, Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Germany, Japan and Mongolia.

MARCH 2009

Greendale Secondary ran a series of competitions starting with the Multimedia Competition where classes had to conduct research on Afghanistan which is our twinned country. The topics that were researched on were: Territory’s history, Socio-Economic Profile, Traditions, Youth & Popular Culture and Sports & Games.

Assembly talk by Mr C Kunalan
Mr Kunalan is another sporting legend who visited Greendale Secondary in 14 April 2009. He is the Honorary Secretary of the Singapore Olympic Academy which is the education branch of the Singapore National Olympic Council.

Mr Kunalan competed in the Tokyo (1964) and Mexico (1968) Olympics and was named as “The most successful track & field athlete in Singapore”. Mr Kunalan who is number 8 in the list of Singapore’s 50 Greatest Athlete by the Straits Times in 1999, received the International Olympic Committee’s Sport and Promotion of Olympism award in 2007.
