English Language is a foundation subject for all students in Greendale Secondary School. The department works closely with the school and community to develop students’ interest in reading, writing and speaking to improve their language proficiency.
Varied student-centred activities cater to the students’ learning styles and aim to maximise learning. The department adopts an integrated approach to learning involving National Education, knowledge of Current Affairs and a thematic approach to vocabulary
Throughout the academic year, students are assessed regularly and formatively to assess their understanding of skills taught and improve their ability in using these skills. Students of similar ability are also banded in Upper Secondary as the Department recognises the need for and the benefit of differentiated teaching and learning.
To develop the students’ abilities and focus on student-centred approaches, students also attend workshops such as ’Learning English through Drama’.
In addition, Lower Secondary students in the Express and Normal (Academic) streams study Literature in English. Upper Secondary students will pursue Literature in English if they exhibit an interest and aptitude in the subject. The school aims to engage students and enhance their enjoyment of literary skills such as understanding of plot, characterisation and themes.
